Mysuru: The 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight (Aug. 25 to Sept. 8), organised jointly by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Health and Family Welfare Department, Mysuru District Blindness Control Division, Nethra Bhandara, K.R. Hospital and Government Higher Primary Pailwan Basavaiah School at Jayanagar, was launched at Jayanagar Community Health Centre (CHC) in city yesterday.
A rally by school students to create awareness on eye donation was flagged off by Pailwan Basavaiah School Head Master M.N. Nagaraju.
The rally passed on prominent roads in Jayanagar during which students distributed handbills on the importance of eye donation.
Later, a stage programme was held at Jayanagar Community Health Centre which was inaugurated by Jayanagar CHC Administrative Officer Dr. Giridhar in the presence of Officers A.S. Manjunath and H.J. Sudheer, Programme Implementation Officer Dr. Nagesh P. Aradhya and others.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nagesh spoke about the importance of eye donation and added that there was no restriction in age to donate eyes besides stating that even those suffering from Blood Pressure (BP), diabetes, those wearing spectacles and even those who have undergone cataract surgery could donate their eyes.

Lions International Eye Bank
Meanwhile, Lions International Eye Bank (LIEB), Bengaluru, will also be creating eye donation awareness from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8 in city. Also various programmes such as audio-visual talks and programmes on radio will be conducted.
The Eye Bank is registered with Government of Karnataka and Eye Bank Association of India and is the main provider of donor corneas for corneal transplantations to most of the Eye Surgeons in the State. There are 4.6 million people who are corneal blind and waiting to receive cornea out of which 60 percent are young adults and children.
