The senior scientists from Hyderabad have monitored the landslides that occurred in Kodagu for three days. After monitoring the activity, they have set up the Seismograph in a special room. This equipment monitors every activity inside the earth, records it and sends it to Hyderabad. Mild tremors were experienced at Galibeedu on Monday and last evening at 5.30 said the scientists.—P.M. Madikeri, Aug.29- A team of Geo-technical experts from NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute) have set up a Seismic Monitoring Centre in Galibeedu’s Navodaya Vidyalaya to closely monitor seismic activity in and around Kodagu.
The Hyderabad-based NGRI, headed by senior scientist Dr. Raghavan, has taken the mud from where landslides have occurred to Hyderabad for testing.
The Seismograph is installed by digging a three feet hole in the ground in a room in the Navodaya Vidyalaya. To monitor the seismic activity 24 hours a day, a solar battery and power back-up has also been set up. A special internet connection has also been given to constantly study seismic activity.
Only second in State: The seismograph imported from United States of America is only the second one to be installed in the State and this will detect and record earthquakes. The first one is installed in Dharwad. This will record the seismic activity and report to the receiving centre in Hyderabad.
Seismograph’s uniqueness: The Seismograph installed at the Navodaya Vidyalaya costs Rs.6 lakh and it records tremors more than 5 Richter Scale that occurs in any part of the world. It will also record earthquakes from 3 to 5 Richter scale in any part of the country and transmit it to NGRI in Hyderabad.
Hence, the seismograph is installed in a specially guarded room in a thermocol pack inside the earth.
