Four new buildings worth Rs. 54 cr. to benefit over 4,300 students
Mysuru: Four new buildings are being constructed at the Government Maharani’s Science College for Women on JLB Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 54 crore. The works are progressing with the aim of completing the project in time for its proposed inauguration in March 2027.
The buildings are coming up on a 9,292-square metre (1,00,020 sq. ft.) site. Each building will have 20 classrooms with a seating capacity of 60 students each, besides 10 laboratories, four seminar halls accommodating 120 students each, four multipurpose halls with a capacity of 100 students each and a library that can accommodate 200 students. Green rooms, store rooms and other facilities are also being provided.
To preserve the heritage character of the campus, the new buildings are being constructed in a heritage style, with wide windows to provide better ventilation and ample natural light.
Officials said there would be no compromise on the quality of construction, as the new infrastructure is expected to meet the institution’s classroom requirements for the next three to four decades.
The original Maharani’s College building, constructed in 1917, was envisioned by the Regent Queen Kempananjammanni, popularly known as Vani Vilasa Sannidhana, to promote girls’ education.

Portion collapses in 2022
In 2022, a portion of the building housing the library collapsed. Subsequently, Chamaraja MLA K. Harishgowda, under whose Assembly Constituency the college falls, submitted a proposal to the then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking funds for the construction of new buildings in the interest of students.
Accepting the proposal, Siddaramaiah sanctioned Rs. 54 crore for the construction of four new buildings, including one at the site where a portion of the old structure had collapsed. The foundation stone was laid on Nov. 13, 2024.
However, the project suffered a setback when a labourer engaged in dismantling a portion of the old building died after a part of the ceiling collapsed on him. The work was temporarily halted before resuming.
At present, nearly 80 per cent of the construction has been completed. Plastering, flooring, painting and electrical works are yet to be completed.
During the current academic year, 1,020 students have been admitted to the first-year BCA and B.Sc. courses. The college has an overall strength of more than 4,300 students. Owing to an inadequate number of classrooms, students from Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Hassan and other districts are facing inconvenience, sources said.

Meanwhile, another building attached to the Maharani’s College complex, near the portion where the laboratory had collapsed, is also in a dilapidated condition.
Although there were plans to restore the structure, the proposal could not be taken forward after a structural stability assessment found the building unsafe for repair.
