Nine tonnes banned plastic seized by MCC

• The banned materials worth about Rs. 10 lakh were stored in godowns at Santhepet
• MCC Commissioner, MLA visit spot

Mysore/Mysuru: A large quantity of banned plastic materials which were stored in various godowns at Santhepet has been seized by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) officials recently. The MCC team led by Environmental Engineer Mythri, which raided the gowdowns, found nine tonnes of the banned plastic materials worth about Rs. 10 lakh stored and seized the banned materials.

Soon after the raids, MLA K. Harishgowda and MCC Commissioner Ashaad-ur-Rahman Shariff arrived at the spot and took the owner of the godowns to task for storing and selling the banned items.

The MLA said that the State Government has announced that Mysuru City is plastic-free and hence action is being initiated on those selling the banned plastic items and added that instructions have also been given to close down plastic manufacturing units.

“Despite this, if any person is found selling the banned plastic materials, legal action will be initiated on them,” the MLA warned.

He also said that vehicles transporting the banned plastics should be intercepted at the check posts, impose fine and seize the materials besides suggesting the MCC officials to conduct raids on shops and godowns selling and storing the banned plastic items to make the city plastic-free.

Shariff said that raids on gowdows storing the banned materials will continue and complaints will be lodged with the Police against the offenders.

MCC Officials said that the seized items will be shifted to Jagannath Tec Pvt. Ltd. at Excel Plant in Vidyaranyapuram where they will be used to make tiles-like construction materials.
