Sir,
This is to bring to your attention a public-interest issue from Rajarajeshwarinagar, 1st Cross Road, near GBJ Hospital, Mysuru. This stretch had witnessed a few accidents in earlier years, including a fatal incident. In response, the authorities installed temporary barricades, after which no further accidents have been reported. Residents acknowledge that these barricades have been effective in addressing the safety concern.
However, there is now an ongoing work to install a permanent concrete road divider along this narrow residential and hospital-access road. This has caused concern among residents and regular commuters:
1. The road is already narrow and a permanent divider will significantly reduce usable road width; 2. Ambulance and emergency vehicle access to GBJ Hospital may be affected; 3. Existing roadside parking will worsen congestion and bottlenecks; 4. Pedestrian movement and local access will be more difficult.
Residents are not opposing road safety measures. The concern is that a permanent divider appears unnecessary when the existing barricades have already solved the accident issue, while the divider would cause long-term inconvenience to hundreds of residents and hospital users.
In addition, there is public discussion regarding a proposed liquor establishment in the same vicinity, close to the hospital.
As per existing norms, liquor outlets are restricted within a prescribed distance from the hospitals. We are questioning whether the recent road modifications could have an indirect impact on distance calculations and compliance.
