Mysore/Mysuru: Even as employees of State Power Corporations are strongly opposing privatisation plans regarding the power sector, the State Government has rejected the Centre’s proposal for privatisation of Electricity Supply Companies (Escoms), saying that is not necessary for now.
The Union Ministry of Energy had sent a proposal to the State Government to privatise three of the five Escoms, while asking it to respond to the proposal by Sept.20. The Ministry, which had identified BESCom, CHESCom (CESC) and JESCom for privatisation, had set Oct.5 as the deadline for responding. Following the proposal, the State Government had sought an additional one week for replying. But the State Government, while rejecting the Centre’s proposal, said that the Escoms of the State were financially viable and as such there was no need for privatisation, according to Additional Chief Secretary of Energy Department Mahendra Jain, who also said that a detailed response in this regard has been sent to the Centre.
