An idol of Ravaleshwara (Ravana) was discovered during the National Service Scheme (NSS) annual camp organised by Maharani’s Arts College at Naguvanahalli in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district recently.
The idol in a damaged state is about 3 ft. tall and 1.5 ft. broad with three heads and four arms. The idol is mounted on a ‘Panipeetha’ with a ‘Chakra’ in one hand and a bow and an arrow in another. A mace is held in another hand and the fourth one holding a sword. The idol is sculpted in the attire of a king with artistic footwear. In front of the ‘Panipeetha’ are carved two rams in a fighting pose. Also sculpted beside the idol are bodyguards and soldiers. A ‘Rudrakshi Maley’ adorns the neck of the idol.
During the reign of Cholas, Ravaleshwara was being worshipped made evident by discovery of similar idols around Mysuru, Mandya and Channapatna.
The discovered idol has been protected by NSS Officer and students near Srinivasa Temple which could be viewed by the public.
