Mysore/Mysuru: Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) NSS Wing State Officer Pratap Lingaiah said that as the NSS has also incorporated personality development and social service along with academics, it (NSS) has grown enormously over the years in the country.
He was speaking after inaugurating the NSS Award (2021-22) presentation ceremony organised by the University of Mysore (UoM) NSS Wing at NSS Bhavan in Saraswathipuram here on Wednesday.
Reiterating that NSS has the capacity to draw society towards social service, Pratap Lingaiah said that NSS teaches students on how to mingle with the society and to lead a life of service and co-operation. Pointing out that NSS students rendered service during last month’s Assembly polls, he highlighted the role of NSS in carrying out several surveys and delivery/distribution of services. He also recalled the services rendered by the NSS during the COVID pandemic.
UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof. N.K. Lokanath said that the NSS which started with 1,100 volunteers from 11 Colleges in 1969, has grown enormously over the years with the number of student volunteers increasing by the year.
At present, more than 19,200 students of the University have registered for NSS services and activities, he added.
Government College for Women, Maddur and Government Maharani’s Women’s Commerce and Management College, Mysuru, bagged the Best Unit Award (2021-22), while D. Suresh Babu, faculty of Maddur Government College and Dr. K.E. Govindegowda, faculty of Maharani’s Women’s College received the Best Programme Officer award.
A.V. Kantamma Best Volunteers Award: Pramod of VSS First Grade College, Ratnapuri, Hunsur taluk; Srikantamurthy of Kuvempunagar Government First Grade College, Mysuru; D.P. Sushmitha of Maharani’s Science College, Mysuru and A. Tanushri of Women’s College, Hassan; U.K. Subbarayachar Memorial Best Volunteer Award: C.J. Prajwal of Gnanadeepa Degree College, Gangothri Layout, Mysuru and J. Dakshath of Seshadripuram Degree College; Best Social Worker Award: D. Sharada of Mandya Government College for Women and Sumodini of D. Devaraj Urs Government First Grade College, Hunsur. As D. Sharada met with an untimely death, her father received the award posthumously.
UoM NSS Co-ordinator Dr. B. Chandrashekar, Programme Co-ordinator Dr. M.B. Suresh, Prof. B.K. Jagadeesh, Prof. Shivaraj, Prof. K.T. Veerappa, Prof. Veeraiah, Prof. Satyanarayana and others were present.
