Mysuru: Online fraudsters on the pretext of disabling credit card protection plan, have cheated a woman to the tune of Rs. 1,95,869 in city.
The woman, who was cheated is Savitha (name changed), a resident of Hootagalli in city.
On July 17, Savitha received a call and the caller told her that her credit card protection plan is enabled and she has to pay Rs. 5,000 every month for it. The caller then told her that he could disable the plan over the phone and abruptly disconnected the call. When Savitha checked her bank account online, she found no message related to disabling credit card protecting plan.
Again, on July 25, she received a call and the caller told her that Rs. 5,000 will be deducted from her account every month if she did not disable the protection plan. When Savitha told her that she had not received any message related to this, the caller told her that the Bank Manager would call her and inform about it. He then disconnected the call.
Later, Savitha got a call and the caller who introduced himself as ICICI Bank Manager Sonu Bhagat, told her to get her credit card protection plan disabled. When Savitha did not believe him, the caller provided the last four digits of her credit card and also gave her the details of the last three transactions besides telling her that her credit card limit can be increased from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh if she does as he tells.
Believing him, Savitha filled a form online and completed the procedure as told by the so-called Bank Manager. The fraudster then made Savitha enter the One Time Password (OTP) sent to Savitha’s mobile phone. After a few minutes of Savitha updating the OTP online, Rs. 1,95,869 was deducted and she received a message in this regard following which the caller disconnected the call.
Realising that she has been cheated, Savitha lodged a complaint at Vijayanagar Police Station.
