Mysuru: Former Corporator Prema Shankaregowda has clarified that there is no genuine opposition from the local residents to the proposed construction of a biogas cremation plant at the Manchegowdanakoppal burial grounds. Instead, she alleged that the resistance is driven purely by political motives.
Responding to a report published in Star of Mysore on Tuesday titled ‘MCC’s eco-friendly biogas cremation plan hits hurdle,’ Prema asserted that the residents have not raised objections to the project. “Some individuals are creating hurdles for political reasons, not out of concern for the local community,” she said.
Highlighting the environmental and functional benefits of the plant, she explained that organic waste can be efficiently converted into biogas, which can be used for cremation while simultaneously generating fuel.
“The energy generated could be used to power streetlights in nearby areas and the by-products can serve as compost for gardens,” she noted.
Despite these benefits, some individuals continue to oppose the project, she reiterated, calling their objections baseless and politically charged.
Citing public pressure, MLA K. Harishgowda has since approved the relocation of the biogas plant and directed officials to find an alternative site.
“Cremations using biogas do not emit smoke or foul odour. A tall chimney ensures any minimal emissions are released high into the atmosphere, preventing any impact on the surrounding area,” Prema Shankaregowda said, adding that she had already briefed the MLA on these points.
