Ordeal of a voter in getting change of address in ID

November 12, 2019

Sir,

I had a terrible experience to change my address in the voters identity card (ID). First I had to submit the voter’s id along with the relevant papers at the Akashavani Circle Corporation Office. Then I was given the cancellation acknowledgement and asked to give it to the school where Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were receiving it.

As I had to change it to Dattagalli I was asked to go to a school close to my house and submit the papers there.

Now comes the glitch. The said school said they had stopped receiving it for the past 15 days and asked us to go to another school slightly far away. This school received from “A” to “I” Blocks and as I was in “J” block not included.

Meanwhile, no BLO was to be seen. So I rang up my area Corporator who was as clueless as me and said he will find out. The next step was to call MCC and ask for the relevant phone numbers of the Election Commissioner. No one answered at MCC, Taluk Office and even personal phones of the officers enlisted went unanswered.

Lastly, I called the Tahshildar and he said go to Room No. 104 in the Office and see the list. If it meant going to Taluk Office why at all have these local centres?

None of the phones even on my repeated calling were neither answered. So what does a layman do?

Voting is my right and to exercise it I have to undergo so much trouble. It makes me think why take the trouble to get it done when so much hassle is concerned. The online correction is also not user-friendly.

It would be better if this voters correction centres list is announced in local newspapers so everybody gets to know of it.
