Mysuru: As part of World Organ Donors Day, city’s Sigma Hospital had organised a function to honour organ donors and transplant recipients for their life-changing contributions at its premises yesterday.
Chief Urologist and senior kidney transplant surgeon Dr. K.M. Madappa and Hospital Managing Director S. Gnanashankar felicitated the organ donors.
The Hospital also celebrated its position as a forefront institution for kidney transplant with a team headed by Dr. K.M. Madappa, along with Urologist and Transplant Surgeon Dr. D.N. Somanna, Nephrologist Dr. Aniketh Prabhakar and anaesthetists performing over 100 transplants with a success rate of 95 percent in the past five years.
Dr. Aniketh Prabhakar highlighted the critical need for organ donation, noting that a single cadaver donation can save up to eight lives.
With over 63,000 patients in India currently waiting for a kidney and about 20 people dying each day due to the shortage, the event served as a powerful call to action, emphasising the need for hospitals, Government and policymakers to work together in spreading awareness and improving access to these life-saving procedures.
