Karwar: Renowned folk singer and Padma Shri awardee Sukri Bommagowda (88), fondly known as Sukrajji, passed away on Thursday at her residence in Badageri village, Ankola taluk. Uttara Kannada district.
She is survived by two grand-sons and a daughter-in-law.
A revered figure in the Halakki community, Sukrajji was often called a “walking encyclopaedia” for her efforts in preserving its rich folk traditions. She had memorised nearly 5,000 folk songs and played a vital role in various social movements. In the 1980s, Akashvani recorded hundreds of folk songs sung by her, ensuring her legacy would endure for future generations.
Her activism was deeply personal when she lost her husband Bommagowda to alcohol addiction at 16. She witnessed the devastating impact of alcoholism first-hand, which fuelled her commitment to social causes.
One of her most impactful contributions was her fight against alcohol addiction in Ankola and nearby areas in Uttara Kannada district. Through folk songs and speeches, she spread awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol on individuals and families.
Her contributions earned National recognition when she was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2017. She was also honoured with the Nadoja Award in 2006 and Janapada Shri Award in 1999 among other awards.
