Mysuru: People For Animals (PFA) Mysuru conducted a 14-day Animal Birth Control (ABC) training programme from Sept. 13 to 26 in association with Humane World for Animals India (HWAI).
The programme was aimed at strengthening ABC operations and improving humane and scientific practices in handling community dogs.
The training was conducted by a team of veterinarians and para-veterinarians from HWAI’s Veterinary Training and Capacity Building (VTCB) team. Three veterinarians and 16 para-veterinarians, animal handlers and cleaning staff from PFA Mysuru participated.
The programme began with an assessment of existing practices and staff knowledge, followed by theory sessions, demonstrations and hands-on training.
Participants were trained in humane catching and handling of dogs, including hand-catching techniques to reduce stress to animals and the risk of bites to staff. Training was also given in safe transportation of dogs, kennel management, cleaning and disinfection, feeding and watering and infection control.
Clinical training covered pre-anaesthetic health checks, weight-based drug dosing, safe anaesthesia, aseptic preparation for surgery and sterilisation procedures.
Participants were also trained in post-operative care, recovery monitoring and maintaining individual records of dogs, including their identification until they are released at the same location from where they were caught.
PFA Mysuru Managing Trustee Savitha Nagabhushan said that the training had helped the organisation’s team improve its skills and confidence in providing humane care to dogs handled at the centre.
HWAI’s India Senior Manager, VTCB, Dr. Sanjay Ahir, said that every stage of an ABC programme, from catching a dog to its release, was important in ensuring animal welfare.
