Plan for pedestrian walkways at RUBs and ROBs

Sir,

This has reference to the news item ‘New Railway Over and Under Bridges sanctioned for city’ (SOM dated Feb.6).  While welcoming such Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and Road Over Bridges (ROBs) that help in easy movement of vehicles at Railway crosses, authorities have to also plan for pedestrian walkways in RUBs and ROBs according to the requirements of the Indian Road Congress while planning so that the right to safe use of roads by pedestrians is not robbed.

After years of follow up action by the undersigned, MCC provided for a decent pedestrian walkway at Road Under Bridge  in Medar Block near Ramanna Circle of Yadavagiri/ Bamboo Bazaar.  Many such ROBs / RUBs exist in Mysuru City and not all of them have decent pedestrian walkways, example: RUB near Civil Court complex – entrance of KG Koppal leading to Kuvempu Nagar.  They have to share the road with the fast moving vehicles thus putting their life in jeopardy.

Therefore, it is appealed that a survey may be conducted about the existence or otherwise of pedestrian walkways and arrange to provide the same on the lines Yadavagiri RUB.

One suggestion: If there is not much of road space for pedestrian walkways, Railway authorities may permit MCC to use their land on either side of the ROB or RUB for providing tunnel walkways for pedestrians with proper approach facility on both sides.
