Mysore/Mysuru: The Hootagalli City Municipal Council (CMC) has implemented a total ban on the production, stocking and use of single-use plastic products within its jurisdiction.
To effectively enforce the plastic-free campaign, a series of information, education and communication programmes have been organised from July 1 to 28, covering the entire CMC area.
During the campaign, the public will be educated about the detrimental effects of plastic product usage, while market and street vendors will receive guidance against producing, storing and selling single-use plastic items. Any violations will result in raids and the imposition of fines on the offending establishments.
In addition, the campaign will focus on raising awareness about plastic waste management and waste segregation at the source. Civic workers will conduct door-to-door visits in conjunction with garbage collecting vehicles across all Wards, aiming to educate residents on these topics. The CMC will recognise commercial shops that have adopted plastic-free practices as ‘Green Organizations.’
To further engage the community, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), schools, and Eco Clubs will collaborate to organise competitions, rallies and plastic-free campus drives in educational institutions. The campaign will extend its reach to public places, tourist spots and religious centres, fostering awareness of the plastic ban.
Public and business enterprises operating within the Hootagalli CMC limits are strictly prohibited from engaging in the production, stocking, distribution and sale of banned single-use plastic items.
Violators may face fines of up to Rs. 5,000. The press release issued by the Hootagalli CMC Commissioner urges the cooperation of the public to ensure the effective implementation of the campaign.
