Masti Venkatesha Iyengar’s contribution for Kannada literature has been enormous. His power of getting into the dialects of various geographies of Karnataka, keeping the language simple for the lay man to understand, but yet ensure the impact of the message is not diluted, is a strength which every writer will not have.
One of his most popular works is ‘Kaakanakote’, a play about the tribes of H.D. Kote, who are under extinction now. The forest in and around the Heggadadevana Kote of Mysuru district is called Kakana Kote.
The story of the play revolves around the man Kaka (Kacha) and the tribe Kurubas. At the time of the play, the tribe was at large and had a rich ethical culture. During the reign of Ranadhira Kanteerava of Mysore, a dispute arose between the tribe and the local administrator Heggade. The dispute was due to excess levy of tax. This was solved by Kaka, who knew the king well.
This play, written in early 20th century, becomes relevant even today. Heggade tries to destroy the tribal culture and evacuate them from the forest. The play attains new light when the nature is at the verge of destruction and the new generation becoming culture-less.
The play ‘Kaakanakote’ will be staged by the students of Rangashikshana Kendra, Mysuru, on Dec. 30 and 31 at Vanaranga in Rangayana premises at 6.30 pm on both days.
Rangayana Mysuru will be transforming to Kaakanakote. The musical play has been directed by senior artiste S. Ramanatha, music composition by Anush Shetty and Stage design by H.K. Dwarakanath.
