Mysuru: Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, through his twitter handle ‘CM of Karnataka’ (@CMofkarnataka) has come to the rescue of a family which is living in abject poverty in Mysuru and has directed Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep to look into the issue and provide shelter to the family that is living in a pathetic condition.
Some residents of Bharatnagar beyond Udayagiri had tweeted to the CM’s official twitter handle about the plight of the family that is living in a small shed on the Mahadevapura Road near KSRTC depot. Responding to the Chief Minister’s tweet on Aug. 21, DC Randeep visited the family yesterday and is now looking into the possibilities of providing shelter under government schemes.
The irony here is that the family has voter ID cards. They even have Aadhaar cards for them to avail of government facilities.
Yet the family has no shelter and has been living in this condition since many years.
Star of Mysore visited the place where the family stays this morning and found a small shed-like structure under a tamarind tree. They have a small shed to live and a ramshackle petty shop to lead a livelihood.
Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep is seen speaking to the distressed family members at his office yesterday.
The family is headed by 75-year-old Abdul Khader and his wife is 50-year-old Noor Jahan. They have three children Tabassum, Sania Banu and Mohammad Saifulla and Tabassum is mentally challenged. All of them live adjacent to the petty shop with a structure made of mud, metal and plastic sheets. The family depends on the meagre income that is generated by selling tea and other snacks.
Seeing their plight, a group of residents led by Hanchya Gram Panchayat member Yakub Sharief tweeted the family’s plight to the CM. According to Yakub, the family has been living under the tamarind tree since many years and they face extreme difficulties when it rains. The family members’ names figure in the list of homeless prepared by the local Jamath Committee. The list also includes the names of 85 other homeless persons at Bharatnagar.
Soon after the CM tweeted, the family was summoned by DC D. Randeep to his office where their living conditions were discussed. The DC will now write to the Slum Board and the Mysuru City Corporation to take up group housing schemes at Bharatnagar. Speaking to SOM, the DC said that land will be provided by the government for the group housing scheme.
