Presidential Election: Some thoughts

Sir,

This refers to Dr. Javeed Nayeem’s article titled “Not so graceful Presidential Election!” in SOM dated June 26. He has rightly said that the President of India is not merely a titular head. He has to use his discretionary powers to safeguard our Democracy and Constitutional rights at the time of exigencies.

Our country has faced a situation, when declaration of Emergency was signed blindly without realising the consequences of such a declaration on our Democracy and Constitutional rights.

Thousands of innocent people were detained and their families suffered without their faults for nearly 18 months. We must salute the people of India, that they fought against Emergency and regained their freedom.

The electorates to the ensuing Presidential Election should use their vote judiciously and cast their votes in favour of he/she, who can safeguard our Democracy and Constitution.

India after independence has faced many such exigencies and has come out with flying colours.

Our Prime Minister has rightly said during his recent foreign tour, that “India is the Mother of Democracy.”
