Sir,
The news of Mysuru City getting an additional 50 traffic signals is both fantastic and appalling (SOM dated Jan. 13).
Fantastic because it is the need of the hour due to the huge increase in the density of traffic movement and appalling due to the unabated traffic violations, including signal jumping.
The audacity of the violators is commendable since they care two hoots about the CCTVs installed near the traffic signals and elsewhere.
After all, the proper functioning of CCTV cameras and their monitoring remains a big question mark. Even assuming that at some places they function satisfactorily, the penalties framed by the Government and imposed are meagre, which the violator never minds paying.
Hence, the Government, besides installing these new signals, should ensure implementation of stricter laws and impose fines commensurate with the present-day inflation. Of course, needless to mention, the traffic signals are more susceptible to accidents if not properly controlled through stricter laws and imposition of huge fines.
