January 19, 2018

The torch-bearers of the famous Lalgudibani (style), Vid. Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Vidu. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi are presenting a violin duet at the Lalitha V. Murthy Endowment (sponsored by Kala Seva Ratna  K.V. Murthy) concert for Raaga Music Academy, on Saturday, the 20th at Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, JLB Road, Mysuru, at 6 pm.

Children of the legendary violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi have been sensitively nurturing and assiduously carrying forward the great legacy. Both of them forayed into the study of music at a very tender age, with father Lalgudi Jayaraman as their Guru. They have travelled all over India and abroad, enthralling audiences, giving solo, duet and collaborative concerts with internationally well-known names in different genres.

They have accompanied the crème-de-la-crème of the music world such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, T.N. Sheshagopalan, Maharajapuram Santhanam, D.K. Jayaraman, Sudha Raghunathan, N. Ramani, Ravikiran and the list goes on.

Krishnan, a top grade artiste at AIR, is the receipient of many awards and titles such as the Sangeet Natak Academy award from the President of India, Sangeetha Kala Sagara, Isaipperoli, Kalaimamani from the Tamil Isai Nataka Manram, Asthana Vidwan of Kanchi Shankara Math. In addition to teaching and grooming youngsters in music, he has been organising Violin Wise, a violin repair and restoration workshop, that teaches the art and science of restoring a violin.

Vijayalakshmi’s greatest moment came when the legendary Pandit Ravishankar, who attended her concert at the US, said, “you have your father’s fingers. Your music has touched my soul”. A postgraduate in English Literature, Vijayalakshmi is also an accomplished vocalist.
