Rain disrupts normal life in city

Mysuru: Heavy rains which lashed city yesterday has burnt wireless equipments at Vidyaranyapuram Police Station and a wall of the Police Station building has been damaged due to lightning besides disrupting normal life in city.

People living in low-lying areas had to spend sleepless night as rain water entered their houses and the residents were seen removing rain water from their houses. This morning, Mayor M.J. Ravikumar, MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, MCC Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu, Corporator Rajeshwari inspected Paduvarahalli in Ward No. 31 which was flooded with rain water, which overflowed from storm water drains.

MCC’s ‘Abhaya’ team was pressed into service to clear rain water from the houses which was flooded yesterday.

Light rains which commenced at about 7 pm, intensified at about 8 pm. People returning home from work and after closing their business were seen taking shelter in all possible places including petrol bunks, under-construction buildings, bus shelters etc.

Knee-deep water was seen flowing on the roads as many drains were blocked and entered low-lying areas besides disrupting traffic on all major roads. Many two-wheeler riders lost their balance and fell down on Hunsur Road. A goods vehicle rammed into an auto at Kautilya Circle near Crawford Hall resulting in the occupants of the auto sustaining minor injuries. With Valmiki Road being flooded, many vehicles were stranded on the road.

A huge tree was uprooted near K.R. Police Station last night and the civic workers were seen cutting the branches and making way for smooth flow of traffic. A wall of a house belonging to one Gurumurthy in Gandhinagar was also collapsed due to heavy rains. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.

With Dasara festivities round the corner and many works taken up with trenches dug up, rain water had filled up the trenches. Motorists and pedestrian were seen cursing the authorities for taking up civic works very late. The public said that it was like oiling the gun at the time of going to war.

Roads turn into rivers: Many roads such as the one in front of SJCE, Valmiki Road, Temple Road, Vani Vilas Road, Mysuru-H.D. Kote Road near Nachanahalli Palya and others, had turned into rivers with knee-deep water. J.K. Grounds near City Railway Station was filled with rain water and the ground resembled a small lake.

Overflowing manholes: Many manholes in Bannimantap, Tilaknagar, Vinayakanagar and other places were seen overflowing on the road due to blockages in the UGD system. MCC workers were seen clearing the manholes of blockages this morning.

Power disrupted: With heavy rains lashing the city for more than 5-6 hours, many areas such as Yadavagiri, Saraswathipuram, K.G. Koppal, Agrahara, Vasanthnagar and others plunged into darkness and the CESC workers who had a tough time, restored power supply after sometime.
