Mysuru – Rain played havoc in city yesterday and people were found stuck at various places without being able to reach their destinations. Electric poles and tree branches were scattered on the roads causing inconvenience to commuters.
What started as a light drizzle at 7.30 pm, turned into a heavy downpour in Kuvempunagar, Saraswathipuram, Rajivnagar, Kalyangiri, Nazarbad, Manchegowdana Koppal, New Sayyaji Rao Road and Agrahara.
Traffic movement on the main road leading towards Agrahara from Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) was disrupted as a huge tree branch had fallen on the road. Similar incidents were reported from other areas too. Electricity connection was also cut-off to these areas as a precautionary measure and was restored once the wind and rain subsided.
Flooding in apartments
The most affected were the residents of JNNURM apartments at Amurtha Layout located near the Outer Ring Road. The rain water entered houses located on the ground floor and residents were seen pumping the water out till late last night.
Trees uprooted
More than 1,000 Neem tree saplings planted near Narayana Hrudayalaya were uprooted owing to heavy wind and rainfall. A sandalwood tree, which had fallen on Saraswathipuram 17th Main Road, was taken away by the Forest sleuths after being informed.
Lights out at Govt. Hospitals
Following yesterday’s downpour, the solar-lamp units installed a few years back at Mysore Medical College, K.R. Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital too came crashing down.
MCC quick to react
The MCC acted swiftly to clear most of road blocks and the Pourakarmikas were also seen removing the stone and mud collected on the road to make way for hassle-free vehicular movement.
More rainfall in city
With the pre-monsoon rain setting in, the city is expected to receive more rainfall in the next three days, according to Organic Farming Research Station (Nagenahalli) Research Associate Narendra Babu.
