IMD forecasts heavy rain across Karnataka from July 8 for five days
Mysuru: Continuous rainfall in Kerala’s Wayanad district over the past two days has led to an increase in the inflow into the Kabini Reservoir in H.D. Kote taluk of Mysuru district.
The Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Reservoir at Srirangapatna in Mandya district has also recorded a marginal rise in inflow following increased rainfall in Kodagu district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast normal rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning across Karnataka for the next five days from today.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in the coastal, Malnad and south interior districts from July 8. Yellow, orange and red alerts have been issued for a few districts. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu are expected to receive widespread heavy rainfall.
The water level in the Kabini Reservoir today stood at 2,258.40 ft., compared to 2,280.41 ft. on the corresponding day last year, against its maximum level of 2,284.00 ft. The reservoir received an inflow of 5,774 cusecs today, as against 12,919 cusecs on the same day last year.
At the KRS Reservoir, the water level stood at 81.55 ft. today, compared to 122.15 ft. on the corresponding day last year. The reservoir’s maximum level is 124.80 ft. The inflow today was 4,291 cusecs, significantly lower than 25,757 cusecs recorded on the same day last year.
Today, 764 cusecs of water was released from the KRS Reservoir for irrigation canals and drinking water purposes, while 500 cusecs was released from the Kabini Reservoir.
During the corresponding period last year, both reservoirs were almost full and water was being released to Tamil Nadu as well as into irrigation canals to support farming activities.
Although the southwest monsoon entered Kerala nearly a month ago, south interior Karnataka has so far received inadequate rainfall, resulting in lower storage levels in both reservoirs compared to last year.
