More rains to bring cheers in coming days

May 3, 2017

Mysuru: Are more rains going to bring cheers to the people and farmers in and around Mysuru in the coming days? The answer could be in the positive as more rains are expected in the next few days. But, the El Nino effect is creating quite a disruption in atmospheric conditions and as a result there was 68 per cent deficit in rainfall last year in Mysuru and surrounding districts, said Naganahalli Organic Farming Research Station Nodal Officer Dr. C. Govindaraju.

According to the data available at the Station, the average rainfall in the last 68 years is 685 mm, while last year it was just 244 mm, which has led to a 68 per cent deficit. The Met Department puts it that the rainfall occurs in every 4 kms as the cloud density goes up. Because of this, there is sporadic rainfall and if there is rain in Mysuru, it will not occur in Naganahalli, which is in the outskirts of the city.

In the last 20 years, there is more rainfall in the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon time than during the monsoon and the temperature, which is now hovering around 33 degrees to 34 degrees Celsius in the month of April and beginning of May, ideally should go up in the last week of May, he said.

If there is La Nina effect, which is the opposite of El Nino, it reduces temperature. But between 1988-2013, the temperature has gone up because of El Nino effect and last year there was complete drought. However, in the next four to five days normal to heavy rainfall is expected in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Kodagu districts, he said.
