Sir,
Traffic violations are rampant across Mysuru. One can see many two-wheelers jumping signals at almost every junction throughout the day.
People also take a left turn and then make a U-turn to go straight when the signal is red, while some regularly use the wrong side of the divider at junctions.
The Traffic Police should use traffic signals more effectively to instil basic traffic sense among habitual violators. It is very easy to catch such offenders at traffic signals and impose regular fines.
Right-turn phases should be separated from straight and left green signals so that people begin to follow lane discipline. If a motorist wants to go straight but is standing in the right lane, he or she should be forced to take a right turn.
Similarly, those intending to turn right but standing in the centre or left lane should not be allowed to do so. This can be easily enforced through proper management of traffic lights.
Also, many people are unaware of the right-of-way at junctions without traffic signals. Everyone tries to move first, resulting in vehicles getting stuck in the middle of the junction. One should stop and allow vehicles coming from the right side to pass first.
If everyone followed traffic rules, there would be little need for traffic signals and all road users would reach their destinations faster.
