Shillong: Meghalaya’s Akash Kumar Choudhary etched his name into the history books of cricket after becoming only the third batter to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket yesterday on Day-2 of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 plate group match against Arunachal Pradesh in Surat, Gujarat.

The 25-year-old right-hander turned the match into a spectacle, swatted Limar Dabi for six 6s in an over, following in the footsteps of Sir Garfield Sobers and Ravi Shastri. He also hit another 2 sixes of the next two balls he faced (8 consecutive sixes) to bring up his half century. Akash surpassed England’s Wayne White, who held the previous record with a 12-ball fifty for Leicestershire against Essex in 2012. Akash’s half-century, off 11 deliveries, was also the fastest-ever fifty in First-Class history cricket match.

Meghalaya declared their first innings on 628/6 after winning the toss on Saturday and choosing to bat first. They are set for a massive win as they skittled Arunachal for 73 and then enforced the follow-on. At stumps, Arunachal were 17/3 in their second innings, still trailing by 526.

Three other Meghalaya batters had memorable outings with the bat, though record-breaker Akash stole the limelight in sensational fashion. Arpit Bhatewara reached his double century on Saturday and was out for 207 on Sunday. Kishan Lyngdoh, meanwhile, was out after amassing 119.

The other successful batter was Rahul Dala, who smashed   144 from just 102 balls (12x4s, 9x6s).
