‘Reality Show diminishing demand for classical art’

November 5, 2018

Regrets well-known danseuse Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy

Mysuru: The demand for classical music and art is going down because of the Reality Shows on television, said ‘Shantala Awardee’  and danseuse Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy, expressing her displeasure.

She was speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of ‘State-level Bharatanatyam Competition-2018’ organised by Bharatiya Nritya Kala Parishat    at Ganabharathi in Kuvempunagar here recently and said that in other countries they are learning our art and culture with great devotion but in our country, the interest to     learn is diminishing.

“The society should encourage Bharatanatyam and other art forms. No doubt money is important but the senior artistes’ cooperation is also very important. For the sake of art, we must support them. The students should also keenly observe other participants’ dance styles,” she said.

“One must be physically strong to perform Bharatanatyam. Hence, the students must learn yoga and inculcate it in their daily practise,” she added.

Industrialist R. Guru  said that it was very difficult to conduct such competitions. It is very laudable that a competition like this is being organised after 20 years, he added.

“In every sphere, the competition is growing. The students must develop a competitive streak. Even though it is not possible for everyone to win, one must strive to win. In this the role of the parents is paramount,” he said. Dr. Mangala Shekar, Padmini Achhe, Girish Putturu, H.R. Unnath, B.S. Indu, Sahana Pradeep Bhat, Shadakshari, Sagar and Mangala Rai were the judges for the contest.

Former MLA Vasu, Ananya Kalaniketana Director K. Brinda, Bharatiya Nritya Kala Parishat President Chandramathi, Secretary Dr. Kumudini Achhe and others were present.
