Reducing Dasara holidays for school students draws flak

Mysuru:  The District Unit of Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association has demanded the State Government to review its decision on reducing Dasara holidays for school students of the district.

In a press release, the President of the Unit H. B. Basavaraj said that State Government has reduced the Dasara holidays to 14 days this year from the 21- day holiday last year.

He said that Dasara is a ten-day long festival. People from all over the world flock the city during the celebrations. People of the district will have to invite their relatives and friends to the fest besides they must spend more time with them. The entire city and district will gear up to host Dasara. People of all ages, students take part in the festivities.

Usually, midterm holidays for schools coincide with Dasara celebrations. When the concept of Makkala Dasara was introduced a few years ago, schools were told to function until the Children’s Dasara events conclude to ensure that the programmes get good participation from children. Moreover, the schools need teachers to coordinate and help children take part in the events.

As Mysuru district has not been affected by nature’s fury like in other parts of the State where students had to stay away from schools for days together, the Government should relax its rules for school students of Mysuru district, he urged in the release.
