Mysuru:  Maintaining that it is important for everyone to respect the rights of others, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Member and former Principal District Sessions Court Judge Chandrashekar Gurubasappa Hungund (C.G. Hungund) said that human rights have a global dimension.

He was speaking after inaugurating Human Rights Day organised under the aegis of Manava Hakkugala Seva Samiti at Town Hall here this morning.

Recalling his five-year experience as a Member of the Commission, Hungund said that he got an opportunity to see closely the problems of the people as a Member of the Commission.

Pointing out that as Judge for 30 years, he had to function under a set framework, he reiterated that he got to know more of public issues as a  Commission Member.

Noting that the concept of human rights was not new, he said that recognising the importance of human rights, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a general resolution in 1948, according to which Human Rights Day is celebrated on Dec.10 of every year since then.

Maintaining that it is the duty of the State and all its agencies to protect human rights of every citizen, Hungund observed that there will be no violation of human rights if every one respects the rights of others.

As part of the programme, a Legal Awareness Session, a Job Mela and a free health check-up camp were held.

The event also marked felicitation to select farmers and Army Jawans and conferment of ‘Manava Ratna’ awards to achievers.

Vangipura Mutt Seer Sri Ilai Alwar Swamiji graced the occasion.

Social worker K. Raghuram, Journalist and Manava Hakkugala Seva Samiti President Kasturi Chandru, women’s wing State President Sumitra Ramesh, Mysuru District President Shashikala Girish, social worker from Bengaluru H.M. Krishanamurthy and others were present.
