I would like to draw attention to the growing issue of traffic violations in Mysuru. With the city’s increasing population, offences such as signal jumping, wrong-side driving and riding on footpaths have become alarmingly common, endangering the lives of rule-abiding citizens.
What is particularly concerning is that even at major junctions like Manipal Hospital Junction, where surveillance cameras are installed, many motorists continue to ignore traffic signals without fear of consequences. This points to a lack of effective enforcement by the Police.
It is also often seen that even in the presence of Traffic Police at busy junctions, motorists blatantly jump signals without hesitation. At the same time, enforcement efforts appear to be focused more on collecting fines on less important roads rather than addressing high-risk violations at major junctions.
If stricter measures are not implemented, Mysuru risks heading down the same path as Bengaluru, where traffic indiscipline has become a major challenge.
A strong step forward would be to increase fines and introduce licence suspension for deliberate and dangerous violations such as signal jumping and riding on footpaths.
The Police authorities must urgently prioritise strict, visible enforcement at major junctions, ensure accountability through existing surveillance systems and impose meaningful penalties to deter such dangerous behaviour
