Roads turn to rivers as heavy rains lash city

October 6, 2017

Mysuru: Even as some parts of the city experienced cloudy weather and a light drizzle, rains lashed the Central Business District and a few other parts turning roads into rivers and throwing normal life out of gear yesterday.

Heavy rains were predicted even during the last two days of Dasara celebrations. However, the rain gods were kind and the events went off very well with lakhs gathered to watch the world famous Dasara procession, returning home with very fond memories.

However, yesterday rains began around 3 pm, just as the shocking news of six people killed due to lightning in Periyapatna was making headlines. Trees were uprooted in a few parts of the city.

Trees were found uprooted on Mysuru-T. Narasipur Road and near Kurubarahalli Circle, on the road that leads to Chamundi Hill, where it fell on a car and completely damaged it. The other places where trees fell were in K.C. Layout, near KVC Hotel, near Sangeeta Corner in Siddhartha Layout and opposite the Mysuru Zoo.

In Saraswathipuram, a tree fell  on an electric pole, which resulted in disruption of power supply. Luckily, no one has been injured. Traffic was disrupted in many places. However, Mysuru City Corporation’s Abhaya team sprung into action and cleared the fallen trees in many places.

In a few places like Kuvempunagar and Chikkagadiyara (Dufferin Clock Tower), since there was no proper drainage facility for the rainwater to flow freely, the places resembled lakes with knee-deep water.

Water gushes into houses: In a few areas that included Vivekananda Nagar,  Sriramapura, Madhuvana Layout, Manjunathapura, Kesare and Shanthinagar, rainwater entered a few houses and the residents had a tough time clearing the water.

Busy market areas like Devaraj Market, K.R. Market, Mandi Market and commercial centres like Makkaji Chowk and Gandhi Square, where there is high density of people and traffic, the water logging caused problems for the public to cross roads or drive their vehicles, as they had to be careful to avoid water-filled potholes.

Again, water was seen flowing like a river opposite Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering near Manasagangothri campus, Hardinge Circle, Milk Diary Circle, Teresian College and near Vijaya Bank Circle in Kuvempunagar.

Power switched off: Since there was heavy rain yesterday afternoon, the Chamundeshwari Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) Limited had cut off power supply and as a result areas like Vidyaranyapuram, Mandi Mohalla, Ashoka Road, Rajkamal Theatre, Gayathripuram, Saraswathipuram, K.G. Koppal and a few other layouts were plunged in darkness till late night.

More rains likely: This year, more than normal rains is predicted in the month of October, said sources in the Naganahalli Organic Farm Research Station. Last year because of shortage of rain, there was a drought-like situation. However, this year in the month of September there was heavy rains and in the coming days in October more rains are predicted, said the source.

On Wednesday, there was 15 mm of rain in around Mysuru and on Thursday also there was similar amount of rainfall, the same scene will continue for the next four to five days, the source said.
