Rs. 4.50 lakh hospital bill still unpaid; injured girl discharged

Jumboo Savari Police lathi incident

Mysuru: Despite assurances from the District Administration that it would bear the entire cost of treatment, the Rs. 4.50 lakh hospital bill of Shishira, the young girl who suffered a serious head injury after being hit by a Policeman’s swinging lathi during the Jumboo Savari procession, remains unpaid.

The incident occurred near Highway Circle on Oct. 21, when a Policeman swung his baton while trying to control the crowd. The blow struck Shishira on the head, leaving her seriously injured. She was immediately rushed to Manipal Hospital for treatment.

District Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah and Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy visited the girl at the hospital. They assured her parents that the Government would bear the entire treatment cost. They also instructed the hospital management not to collect any further payment from the family.

Shishira underwent surgery on Oct. 22. Her parents had paid Rs. 2.50 lakh towards the medical expenses by then.

Following the visit by the Minister and the DC, the hospital continued treating her without seeking any further payment from the family.

After surgery, she was kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and shifted to the general ward on Oct. 24 as her condition improved. She was discharged on Oct. 27 on the recommendation of doctors. The hospital did not ask her parents to make any further payment at the time of discharge either.

However, while the total treatment bill came to Rs. 4.50 lakh, the hospital has reportedly not received any payment from either the Police Department or the District Administration. Nor has it received any official communication on the settlement of the bill.

Hospital management sources said, Police officials had informed them that the Deputy Commissioner’s office would send a letter regarding payment within two or three days. However, no such communication has reached the hospital so far.
