RS Polls: Sonia Gandhi jumps into fray from Rajasthan

Jaipur: Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan, this morning. Sonia, who is also Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, was accompanied by her son Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, when she filed her nomination at Jaipur.

The party is certain to win one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from that State, currently held by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose six-year term in the upper house of Parliament will be coming to an end in April.

Sonia Gandhi will be the second member of Gandhi family to enter Rajya Sabha after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was a member of the Upper House from August 1964 to February 1967.

Sonia Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli in Lok Sabha, will not contest the upcoming polls as her daughter Priyanka Vadra is likely to contest from the same seat. Sonia Gandhi was first elected as an MP in 1999 after taking over as the  Congress President.
