Selected for Vanamali and Mathoorji Seva Awards

Mysuru: The city’s Shree Vanamali Charitable Trust will confer ‘Shree Vanamali Samskruti Seva Prashasti’ on well-known English Writer and Semantics Scholar Dr. T.R.S. Sharma and ‘Padmashri Dr. Mathoor Krishnamurthy Samaja Seva Prashasthi’ on M.S. Sushma of Janaseva Trust – Chiguru Ashrama at the awards ceremony to be held at Ganabharathi’s Veene Seshanna Bhavan on Adichunchanagiri Road in Kuvempunagar on Nov.2 at 5 pm.

The Trust was founded by Padmashri late Dr. Mathoor Krishnamurthy in 2009.

Both the awards carry a cash prize of Rs.25,000, a citation, Sri Vanamali Statuette, along with other congratulatory bouquets.

Veteran Scholar Dr. T.V. Venkatachala Shastry will preside. Writer Dr. C.Naganna and Columnist S.G. Seetharam  will speak on the awardees.

Profiles

Dr. T.R.S. Sharma is a native of Melukote in Mandya district. After getting his MA degree from the University of Mysore, he did his Master’s degree from Colorado University, USA and obtained his Ph.D in Canada. He later served in many prestigious  Universities in India. He has also served as a Deputy Director of the ‘American Studies Research Centre,’ Hyderabad. He was the Chief Editor of three volumes — Indian Literature-An Anthology and A Collection of Essays on the Mahabharata’ which were published by Kendriya Sahitya Academy.

The 87-year-old Dr. Sharma  is a direct disciple of Yogacharya Krishnamacharya and learnt yoga from Swami Kuvalayananda of Kaivalyadhama.

He is recognised by the literary world for his invaluable contribution to ‘Semantics’ class of Literature. His highly knowledgeable book in this class is recognised by ‘The Institute of General Semantics of New York,’ USA. He was also honoured with The Hayakawa Book Prize in 2008. He was a student of Prof. C.D. Narasimhaiah (late CDN) and also a classmate of legendary writers late A.K. Ramanujan and late Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy. Dr. Sharma is one of the most respected scholars in both Kannada and English Literature.

M.S. Sushma

The 28-year-old M.S. Sushma is from an agricultural family in K.R. Pet taluk of Mandya district. She joined the NSS  while doing her graduation and won ‘Best Volunteer in Social Service’ award. She did her MSW in 2013 and landed a job in RVM Foundation, a social service organisation based in Bengaluru. 

She returned to Mysuru in 2014 and started ‘Chiguru Ashrama’ under the name of ‘Janaseva  Trust’, where she is serving the mentally and physically challenged women. She has been recognised and honoured  by various social forums for her concern towards the socially downtrodden.
