Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Mysuru, conducted the State Camp of Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM), a National-level talent search exam, at Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development (VLEAD) on Feb.19.
The event was organised by Vigyan Prasar, Vijnana Bharati and NCERT, to popularise science and identify talented students from across the community. Nearly 1 lakh students participated in the written exam across the country in Nov. 2016. The top 120 students, 20 per class, from each State were selected for the State Camp.
In all,113 of the 120 students selected in the written round in Karnataka, participated in the SVYM State Camp. Each of the student took eight rounds of assessments including written tests, experiments, video appreciation and situational problem analysis.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), addressed the students about the work done by DFRL and motivated them to take up pure sciences as a career option. He encouraged them to ask questions and invited them to visit DFRL to understand research in action.
Dr. (Flt. Lt.) M. A. Balasubr-amanya, Secretary and CEO of SVYM presided over the prize distribution programme.
During the day, a panel discussion on “Career Opportunities in Pure Sciences” was also conducted for the parents. Dr. Arvind Ranade, Scientist of Vigyan Prasar, Dr. Shantala Priyadarshini, Government Ayurveda College, Mysuru, Kollegala Sharma, Scientist of CFTRI and Chandrasekharan Nair, CEO of Vijnana Bharati, participated.
Twelve students were selected in the State Camp to participate in the National Camp in May 2017. Among them, 8 students are from Bengaluru, 2 from Mangaluru and 2 from Mysuru.
