Mysuru: An interactive session on oral hygiene and oral cancer prevention was organised by the NCC Units and Rotaract Club of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College in association with Internal Complaints Committee and IQAC here recently.
JSS AHER Assistant Professor Dr. Prasanna Deshpande, a specialist in Oral Medicine and Radiology, who was the resource person, said “It is important to have knowledge on oral health at an early age as it is not only related to mouth but also associated with digestion, helps in absorption of micro-nutrients in the gut and contributes to proper phonetics.”
Emphasising the effects of tooth decay and its consequences, he said, “Toothache due to decay is the second worst known pain to humans. Getting treatment early is better than relying on advanced procedures later.”
On replacing the missing teeth, he explained that teeth are always in contact with each other. If we lose a tooth and it is not replaced, the adjacent teeth are at a greater risk of decay and may grow in different shapes.
Deliberating about oral cancer, he warned that the oral cancer can be fatal and may also be linked to other diseases.
“There are several causes of oral cancer. Chewing tobacco, smoking and alcohol consumption significantly increase the risk. Oral cancer can also result from natural radiation and chemicals present in food,” he said calling upon students to cultivate healthy habits.
College Principal Dr. B.R. Jayalakshmi, Dr. Mrinal Deshpande, NCC Flying Officer Dr. P.G. Pushparani, Department of Kannada Head Dr. H.R. Thimmegowda, Rotaract Club of Mahajana Teacher Convenor V. Gayatri, Rotaract Club of Mahajana President Rtr. Mohith Purohit, Secretary Rtr. Arman Billal, Treasurer Rtr. Dhanush S Honnal, Rotaract members and NCC cadets took part in the interactive session.
