Set the Expressway speed limits based on road design

Sir,

The recent press reports about the Safety Committee’s establishment to address safety concerns on Mysuru – Bengaluru Expressway have sparked discussions about potential measures to improve road safety.

One of the proposed solutions (now enforced from Aug. 1) is to ban two-wheelers and three-wheelers from using the Expressway. However, it’s essential to understand that accidents on the Expressway are mostly caused by cars and larger vehicles losing control due to various factors.

As a Highway engineer with knowledge of road design and traffic engineering, I believe that the key to enhancing safety lies in implementing speed reduction measures, particularly around curves. Abroad, Highways often have stretches with speed limits below the design speed for curves.

By adopting this approach on our Expressway, we can significantly reduce the chances of accidents caused by high-speed manoeuvres on curved sections.

The focus should not be on imposing a constant 100 kmph maximum speed limit throughout the Expressway. Instead, we should be strategic in setting speed limits based on the road design and potential accident-prone areas. Lowering the speed limit by about 10 kmph below the design speed for curves can make a significant difference in preventing accidents.

Regarding the Police road show and safety awareness parades, while they may have their place in creating awareness, they should not be seen as the ultimate solution to road safety. To make a real impact, law enforcement needs to be proactive and consistent in enforcing road rules and regulations. Culprits responsible for dangerous driving should be caught and punished regardless of their affiliations or social status.

It is crucial for elected representatives and influential individuals in society to refrain from interfering with the course of law and justice. Allowing the law to function independently and without bias is essential for ensuring a fair and just system that upholds road safety for everyone.
