Shun plastic bag, use cloth bag campaign held

MCC officials create awareness on plastic ban among shopkeepers, roadside vendors

Mysore/Mysuru: In the background of the District Administration deciding to ban the use of plastic from Apr. 5, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) officials on Thursday, conducted ‘Shun plastic bag and use cloth bag’ campaign among shopkeepers and roadside vendors in city.

The officials, who visited various shops on Devaraja Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road, Santhepet, Vinoba Road and surroundings, instructed shopkeepers to compulsorily use cloth bags and also created awareness on the ban of plastic.

The shopkeepers were also instructed to keep a 30 litre capacity dustbin in front of the shops to dump waste and give only cloth bags to customers from Apr. 5.

A team led by Deputy Mayor Anwar Baig, Corporator M.D. Nagaraj, MCC Health Officer Dr. D.G. Nagaraj and Environmental Engineer Mythri, visited a few shops on Devaraja Urs Road in Ward 23, where large quantity of plastic waste is being generated and gave the shops blue coloured dustbins of 30 litres capacity and gave cloth bags to roadside vendors near Dufferin Clock Tower.

The MCC officials also created awareness on the benefits of taking COVID vaccine and told them that those above the age of 45 can take the vaccination. They urged the public to wear face masks and maintain social distance besides washing hands with soap and use of hand sanitiser to protect themselves from the second wave of the pandemic which was spreading fast.

On the occasion, volunteers of Human Touch Foundation collected plastic waste discarded in front of shops and roadside on Devaraja Urs Road and Vinoba Road.
