Mysuru, June 2 (BCT)- Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President M.K. Stalin’s wife, Durga Stalin, visited prominent temples in and around Mysuru yesterday, even as her son and former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin continues to court controversy over his remarks on Sanatana Dharma.
Arriving from Kodagu, Durga, known for her deep religious beliefs, was accompanied by her sister Jayanti, Indira Rajendran, wife of former Tiruvallur MLA Rajendran and an aide, Rajkumar.
The group first visited the Nimishamba Temple in Srirangapatna and later proceeded to Chamundi Hill, where they offered prayers at Sri Chamundeshwari Temple, Mysuru.
What attracted attention during the visit was that a puja at the Chamundeshwari Temple was performed in the name of Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has repeatedly abused Sanatana Dharma.
Ahead of the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Udhayanidhi Stalin had sparked a political storm after describing Sanatana Dharma as “a social disease that must be eradicated.” He then again reiterated his position, saying that any ideology that discriminates against people must be abolished, once again triggering political debate over his views on Sanatana Dharma.
Observers have often pointed to the contrast between the public positions taken by Udhayanidhi Stalin and the personal religious beliefs of Durga Stalin, who is widely regarded as a devout Hindu and a regular visitor to temples.
Known to be humble, Durga and her entourage stood in the queue along with other devotees and did not avail themselves of the VIP protocol.
It may be recalled that Durga Stalin had also visited the famed Kollur Mookambika Temple in May this year.
