A look at the present condition of Nanjangud’s two major roads (RP Road and MGS Road) is highly horrifying. Work on replacing age-old open drainage with the box-type ones is on. One side of the road is already dug but the excavated loose earth is haphazardly dumped at the very centre, blocking traffic movement intermittently on both the roads.
Recent heavy rains further worsened the situation, as soil is unevenly spread and scattered all over, causing muddy lumps left, right and centre, making the area highly slippery. One can’t even walk over it, let alone vehicular movement.
Moreover, the domestic sewage is let a free flow over the already slushy surface causing abnormal stench. I wonder how people, especially the cyclists and two-wheelers, unmindful of the problem, go past the route coolly, soaking their tyres in the muddy water, sprinkling dirty water on the passers-by.
Movement of four-wheelers is next to impossible right now. That too, passing through the underbridge opposite the main Post Office is terrifying, as rain water clogs heavily during monsoon.
Reason for this sorry state is the unscientific method adopted by the concerned. At least one road should have been done up fully before harping on the other, that would have allowed free movement alternately. Rather, work on both the roads is taken up simultaneously.
Laying jobs between Nehru Circle (Municipal Office Circle) and the old Town Police Station on MGS Road and the stretch between 8th and 17th Cross on RP Road are in full swing. Unfortunately, the third parallel road (Narasegowda Raste), the only alternative route, runs half-way through (from 16th Cross to 1st Cross) and ends abruptly at the canal.
With vehicle movements on the rise each day, it is high time the work is hastened up by resorting to viable and scientific methods, and also provide alternate routes for pedestrian movement at least till the work is satisfactorily completed.
