Speed limit on Outer Ring Road: A retrogressive step

August 16, 2024

It appears to prioritise revenue generation

Sir,

This refers to the news item ‘Speed Limit Set on Outer Ring Road’ (Star of Mysore dated Aug. 11). This decision represents a significant step backward for the current Government and its taxpayers.

The concept of a Ring Road was designed to alleviate traffic congestion on main roads and facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles in and out of the city. The majority of the Ring Road in Mysuru is in excellent condition, and with modern vehicle technology, even a gentle acceleration can easily propel vehicles beyond 60 kmph.

Before finalising this restrictive speed limit of 60 kmph for four-wheelers, the Government should reconsider their decision. A more reasonable approach would be to set the maximum speed limits as follows: 80 kmph for four-wheelers, 60 kmph for buses and two-wheelers, 50 kmph for lorries, trucks, light commercial vehicles, and autos, and 30 kmph for tractors.

Imposing lower speed limits across the board, coupled with the implementation of Integrated Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), seems to be an attempt by the financially strained Government to boost revenue through fines.

This approach appears to prioritise revenue generation over effective traffic management, motorist safety and public convenience, potentially to fund various guarantee schemes and programmes by the State Government.
