STAR THIS WEEK: Talented Golfer: Yashas Chandra

Golf, the sport which is played amidst beautiful surroundings,  demands the ability to analyse and adjust to variable elements as well as the risk-reward factor, altogether making the game so rewarding or so humbling. Mysuru lad M.S. Yashas Chandra, one of the top amateur golfers in the country in the men’s section, performed well in the recently concluded IGU YES Bank Southern India Amateur Golf Championships-2017, from June 6 to 9 at Hyderabad and finished a creditable third with a four-day aggregate score of 283 (66+69+72+76).  He is our ‘Star This Week.’

Yashas has been performing consistently in the Amateur circuit and taking part in the IGU YES Bank Southern India Amateur Golf Tournament at Hyderabad led the field after two-day’s but finally ended up third in the tournament. Viren Thapar of Punjab clinched the title with a four-day aggregate score of 277 (69+66+69+73). Karthik Sharma of West Bengal secured the second place with a four-day score of 281.

Earlier, Yashas did every one proud by winning the Rotary Bangalore-IGU Karnataka State Amateur Golf Championship at the Eagleton Golf Resort, Bidadi, near Bengaluru, recently. Yashas, playing some superlative golf on the final day, carded a six-under 66 to finish the Tournament with a four-day aggregate score of 280 and clinched the title.

Yashas finished one shot ahead of overnight leader Kartik Sharma who took the second runner-up place with a four-day aggregate score of 281. Anant Singh Ahalawat of Chandigarh took the first runner-up spot with a four-day aggregate score of 281 (76,75,65,65).

Coming after a quarter-final performance in the South African Amateur Championship, where he became the first Indian to get so far, Yashas played some consistent golf and clinched the coveted title at the Karnataka State Amateur Championships.

Yashas was part of the National squad which toured South Africa. Presently in the 2017 season, Yashas is ranked No.7 in the country and last year in 2016, he finished second at the end of the season with 167 points. Mysuru’s I.L. Aalap is seeded sixth in the 2017 season.

Encouraged by his parents, this talented golfer from JWGC, Mysuru, intends to work hard and do well by representing the National squad in the Amateur section in the days to come.
