Bengaluru: The State Government has written to the Union Government against implementing Railway Projects in Kodagu district.
Kodagu District in-Charge Minister M.R. Seetharam, speaking at the 59th anniversary of Karnataka Planters Association (KPA) here yesterday, said that the implementation of Railway Projects in Kodagu district affects the environment.

The State Government has written a letter to the Central Government against taking up railway projects in the district, he said and added that the Government was framing policies to protect the interests of coffee and pepper growers in Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu and Sakaleshpur areas.
KPA President M.M. Chengappa requested the Government not to expand road networks and not to implement Railway Projects in the district as it would affect the environment.
Referring to the problems faced by coffee and pepper growers, he said that the Government should take measures to protect the interests of small coffee planters and that the Government should ban import of pepper seeds from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries as it was affecting pepper growers in the district.
Coffee Board Chairman M.S. Bojegowda, in his address, said that Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Sakaleshpur regions have a long history of coffee plantation.
Pointing out that coffee was grown in more than 10,000 acres of the State, he urged the Central and State Governments to come in support of coffee growers.
