Statue of ‘Maharshi Sushruta’ to be unveiled at MMC&RI tomorrow

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), Mysuru and  MMC Alumni Association, have organised a function to inaugurate the statue of ‘Maharshi Sushruta’, the Father of Surgery, tomorrow (Mar.25) at 11 am, at the newly constructed Academic and Library building in the Old Exhibition campus adjoining the Medical College.

Dr. G.N. Narayana Reddy, 93-year-old alumnus of Mysore Medical College and former two-time Director of NIMHANS, Bengaluru, will be the chief guest and unveil the statue.

Dr. M.A. Shekar, Vice-Chancellor, Adichunchanagiri University, B.G. Nagar, Bellur; Dr. C.G. Narasimhan, noted Surgeon and Dr. S. Chandrashekar, President, MMC Alumni Association, will be the guests of honour. Dr. K.R. Dakshayini, Dean and Director, MMC&RI, will preside.

The installation of Sushruta’s statue was conceptualised two years back and donated by Dr. C.G. Narasimhan, an alumnus of Mysore Medical College. 

Made of black stone (Krishna Shile), the 6 ft. tall statue with a pedestal is sculpted by city’s renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj, who has carved the statues of  Adi Shankaracharya at Kedarnath and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate in Delhi.

It is noteworthy that no other Medical College in the country has a statue of Sushruta, claimed Dr. Narasimhan adding that the statue will be a blessing for Mysore Medical College which will be celebrating its centenary from August 2023 to September 2024.
