Mysuru city, which was previously rated the numero uno cleanest city in the country has slid down to 5th place now. But our city is not completely clean because of the foul smell emanating from storm-water drains.
The name storm-water itself implies that the drain is meant to drain off rain water only. But sewage water is flowing in them. The sewage water is from the slums and semi-slums which have come up all along the drain.
The slum and semi-slum dwellers should be shifted to a better healthy place by providing all the civic amenities there. The area available after shifting the dwellers should be developed as parks or if the area is very big, it should be a playground. About the storm-water drains, they should be covered with RCC slab, but the side walls of the drains are built with size stone masonry which are normally of substandard quality. Therefore, RCC ducts should be built all along the drain to dispose off the rain water.
Manholes and air vents should be provided at frequent intervals. The ducts should be either single or twin depending on the rain water drainage area. Either end of the RCC ducts should have strong grilled doors which should be locked and sealed and open only to clean the ducts once in a year.
The outfall of the drainage ducts are usually near some lake. The rain water collected from the storm-water drains at the lakes could be suitably treated and supplied as drinking water to the nearby locality.
Similarly, the sewage underground water should be scientifically treated and the clear water supplied as water for irrigating horticulture crops.
