How a government intent on executing a project of massive proportion in an ecologically sensitive Chamundi Hill, with magnificent Chamundeshwari temple situated on the top presenting a grand panoramic view of city and visited by an army of people year round, is now showing the signs of imminent danger of its deterioration to be reduced into a rubble hill in not distant a future as evidenced by the pictures (Star of Mysore dated June 19).
Whether it is in respect of steel bridge in Bengaluru or rectifying the sharp curve on Hunsur Road, the government had to backtrack due to justified protest by the public and this is the track record of the government and the ulterior motive for taking such projects is well- known. However, in respect of Chamundi Hill the government embarked on an ill-conceived massive project despite protest by the public comprising committed environmentalists, social activists, youths, intellectuals and senior citizens.
As always to counter the protest, the government, arming itself with a clearance obtained by an obliging committee of experts (?) to get a favourable report, appears to be hell bent on destroying the pristine environment of Chamundi Hill in the name of development. Unless immediate action is taken to reverse the situation, the irreversible damage will be done.
It is hoped that the new Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will intervene to stop further construction activity and appoint a suitable authority to make its recommendation.
