‘Study report on sex workers still lying under wraps’

Mysuru: “The government should give a serious thought to implement the recommendations put forward by the Study Committee constituted by the government to look into the problems of sex workers so that the transgenders and others were rescued from the flesh trade racket,” said Dr. Meenakshi Bali, Committee member and women Activist.

She was speaking at a seminar on ‘Neglected Communities’ as part of the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall here yesterday.

Dr. Meenakshi Bali recalled that the State Government had constituted the Study Committee last year headed by Jayamala but regretted that despite submitting the report, the government had remained silent. She pointed out that the flesh trade racket included women, children, transgenders and men too. She further said that the committee had done extensive study in 30 districts unearthing a few cruel incidents. She regretted that mentally challenged women were easily  pushed to flesh trade which was inhuman. She however mentioned that the study committee could not access the hi-tech flash trade racket still flourishing in cities.
