Mysuru: For the first time, Mysuru-based premier institute All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), set up an outreach service and newborn screening centre at Vivekananda Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Saragur, H. D. Kote taluk, recently.

With this SVYM becomes a taluk nodal centre for Audiometry and Speech Therapy which will benefit the communities of H. D. Kote at large.

Members of the community in Saragur and H. D. Kote taluk can avail services related to  diagnosis, rehabilitation and provision of hearing aids for  free at the centre.

Moreover, unlike the other outreach centres of AIISH, here community members can avail services of both the outreach service and newborn screening at the same place, thus saving them the trouble to travel to  Mysuru city for diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking after inaugurating the outreach service centre, Director of AIISH Dr. Asha Yatiraj said, “If the newborn is screened at birth for a hearing problem, followed by right diagnosis and rehabilitation within six months, the child can grow up to be  almost normal.”

Speaking on the occasion,  Dr. (Flt. Lt.) M. A. Balasubramanya, Secretary & CEO, SVYM, said, “With the outreach service and newborn screening centre in Saragur, H. D. Kote will no longer have to bear the tag of being one of the backward taluks in Mysuru district. The services of this centre is available for the entire taluk and children born in both government and private hospitals can access  this free of cost.
