SWR creates awareness on diabetes

Mysuru: As part of International Diabetes Day, South Western Railway (SWR) conducted an awareness talk on diabetes at the Diesel Shed in Hubballi.

Dr. M.N. Ramakanth, Medical Director, Central Railway Hospital, Hubballi, spoke about causes of diabetes and its health effects.

Dr. P. Venkatram, Chief Medical Superintendent, spoke about precautions to be taken for foot care and its prevention.

Dr. Krishnananda Prabhu welcomed. Dr. K. Suresh Babu spoke in detail about diabetes, causes and  risk factors like unhealthy foods, physical inactivity, stress, obesity, signs and symptoms etc.

Expressing concern that about 50% of people were unaware that they have diabetes, he said that in India, presently there were 65.1 million cases and by 2030, there will be 103 million cases of diabetics in the country.

Stating that diabetes can be controlled by making changes in lifestyle, diet restrictions and physical activity, he said early detection of diabetes was  important.

Parimal Shinde, Senior Divisional Mechanical Eengineer, Anjeneyulu, Divisional Mechanical Engineer, Vikas, Family Welfare Staff and more than 100 employees attended the programme, according to a press release from the Chief Public Relations Officer, SWR, Hubballi.
